In the present-day storyline, Kate Kirby, a renowned American jewelry historian, receives a phone call about the famous “Cheapside Jewels” and immediately realizes that a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity awaits her.

During her trip to London, however, Kate is forced to confront the long-buried secrets of her own family. Back in Boston, she discovers a series of sketches among her great-grandmother’s papers that reveal a connection between her great-grandmother Essie – a woman who fought for women’s rights – and the Cheapside collection. Could these drawings reveal Essie’s secret life in early twentieth-century London?

With the help of photographer Marcus Holt, Kate begins investigating the history of the Cheapside jewels, focusing particularly on a small diamond ring with enamel inlay. Soon, however, everything Kate thought she knew about her family, the gemstones and even herself is put at risk.
